What Is Whatnot and How Does It Work?

Whatnot is a marketplace built around live video shopping. A seller shows products on camera while buyers bid, purchase fixed-price items, enter giveaways, or buy spots in eligible card breaks.

You can also buy some products outside live shows.

The platform feels simple until the first fast auction. The important parts are the timer, bid type, exact listing, shipping, and the rules for fixing a problem.

Ways to buy on Whatnot

Live auction

The seller runs an item for a set time. The highest valid bid wins.

Buy It Now

The product has a fixed price. No bidding is required.

Offer

For eligible listings, the buyer proposes a price. Referral credit and some coupons may not apply to offers.

Pre-bid

A buyer can set a maximum before the auction begins. The system bids automatically up to that limit.

Flash Sale

A seller temporarily discounts an eligible fixed-price item during a show.

Giveaway

A seller offers an item for free. The buyer enters through the app and must remain present for the drawing.

Card break

The buyer purchases a defined spot or allocation in a sealed-product opening. The result depends on the break format and what is opened.

Standard timer versus Sudden Death

A Standard auction can add time after a late bid so other buyers have a chance to respond.

Sudden Death does not add time. The highest accepted bid when the clock reaches zero wins. A skull icon marks Sudden Death auctions.

This difference matters. A strategy that works with an extending clock can fail in Sudden Death.

Max Bid versus exact custom bid

Max Bid is the safer tool for most buyers.

With Max Bid on:

• You enter the most you are willing to pay.
• Whatnot bids in increments for you.
• Your maximum stays private.
• You may win for less than the maximum.

With Max Bid off:

• The full custom amount can be placed immediately.
• A buyer who intended to set a ceiling can accidentally submit the exact amount.

Always check the toggle before confirming a custom bid.

Pre-bids and ties

A pre-bid works like a Max Bid placed before the auction.

When two buyers use the same maximum, the earlier bid generally has priority. Entering the same amount later may not take the lead.

A pre-bid should already include your expected shipping and tax exposure. It should not be based only on the item price.

Worth checking before you bid: cancel a Whatnot order or accidental bid.

Read the listing, not only the video

The camera may show several products while one listing is active. Confirm:

• Exact product
• Quantity
• Size
• Color
• Condition
• Variant
• Whether accessories are included
• Whether the item is raw, graded, sealed, opened, or used

A seller can speak quickly or change products. The title and listing details are part of the purchase record.

Shipping is calculated during buying

Whatnot normally shows shipping before checkout and on the receipt.

Eligible same-seller purchases can bundle. Show purchases and marketplace purchases may not bundle together. A new purchase can add no shipping, a small amount, or an entire new shipment depending on weight, size, item type, and seller settings.

Do not assume every $1 auction creates a $1 delivered item.

Are bids final?

Bids are generally binding. A buyer can request cancellation before shipment, but the seller decides whether to approve it in most cases.

Whatnot may consider limited exceptions, including a reported technical bidding error submitted quickly and certain one-time cancellation situations before a label is created. Those exceptions are not a general return policy.

What happens after purchase

The seller prepares the order and ships it. Whatnot’s seller rules generally expect shipping within two business days, although carrier scans and special products can affect the timeline.

When the package arrives:

1. Photograph the unopened package if it looks damaged.
2. Open it on video for expensive or easily substituted items.
3. Compare every item with the receipt.
4. Inspect condition immediately.
5. Save packaging until the inspection is complete.
6. Report a problem before the applicable deadline.

Buyer Protection

Buyer Protection can cover missing, incorrect, damaged, defective, expired, counterfeit, delayed, or materially misdescribed purchases.

The deadline depends on the category. High-risk categories such as trading cards, sports cards, sneakers, luxury goods, and coins can have shorter delivery-based windows than general merchandise.

Buyer remorse is not the same as a covered problem.
