Buying Jewelry on Whatnot
Verified August 1, 2026. Refreshed Weekly.
A jewelry show can move from a $5 costume ring to a high-value gold and gemstone piece in seconds.
The buyer needs the exact material, weight, stone information, condition, and size before comparing price.
Metal disclosure
Whatnot’s jewelry guidance says sellers should state metal purity and whether the item is:
- Solid
- Filled
- Plated
- Flashed
Those words are not interchangeable.
Examples:
- 14k solid gold
- Gold-filled
- Gold-plated sterling silver
- Gold-tone base metal
- Sterling silver
- Silver-plated
- Unknown metal
A hallmark is evidence, not a complete test. Marks can be false or attached to replaced parts.

Ask for weight
Weight helps a buyer judge:
- Metal content
- Hollow versus solid construction
- Comparison with similar pieces
- Shipping and handling
- Whether a claimed gram price makes sense
The total weight includes stones and non-precious components unless the seller states otherwise.

Gemstone disclosure
Ask:
- What is the stone?
- Is it natural, lab-grown, or simulated?
- Is it treated?
- Is the treatment permanent?
- Who identified it?
- Is there a laboratory report?
- Does the report match this exact item?
Whatnot’s guidance tells sellers to disclose gemstone type and whether it is natural or lab-grown, or clearly state when the information is unknown.
“Diamond” should not be used when the seller means cubic zirconia, moissanite, or an unidentified clear stone.

Condition checklist
Inspect:
- Missing stones
- Loose stones
- Chips
- Scratches
- Bent prongs
- Broken clasp
- Chain repair
- Solder
- Resizing
- Plating wear
- Tarnish
- Engraving
- Hollow dents
- Replaced parts
A polished close-up can hide clasp and underside problems.
Worth checking before you bid: avoid overpaying at live auctions.
Ring sizing
Ask whether the size was:
- Read from a mandrel
- Estimated
- Converted from another system
- Measured before or after resizing
Wide bands can fit tighter than thin bands with the same nominal size.
Background: current shipping and bundling rules.
Price method
Separate:
- Metal value
- Stone value
- Brand value
- Design value
- Condition
- Authentication
- Resale liquidity
A gold gram calculation does not price a signed designer piece. A retail appraisal does not prove resale value.
Evidence to save
For expensive jewelry, save:
- Listing
- Seller’s metal claim
- Seller’s stone claim
- Weight
- Size
- Hallmarks
- Report number
- Full video or screenshots
- Receipt
When the item arrives
- Weigh it.
- Photograph hallmarks.
- Check stones and prongs.
- Test with appropriate non-destructive methods or a qualified jeweler.
- Keep packaging.
- Report a material difference immediately.
